From novelist William Gibson's famous phrase, "The future is already here. It’s just not very evenly distributed," Sungseok Ahn depicts children as future humans arriving into the present moment. Reminiscing on a time when we were all children, he audiovisually unfolds imaginary adventures and fantasies that stand against the anxiety, skepticism, frustration, and limitations of the adult world. The period of adulthood, which cannot be completely liberated from the present, unfolds into another temporality through the mediating figure of the child, whose existence holds infinite possibilities. Ahn’s work, remembering all of us as the children we once were, raises the question of what to give back to the next generation, and hints at a hope for those who come after us.

작가는 윌리엄 깁슨의 유명한 문구인 “미래는 이미 여기에 와있다. 널리 퍼지지 않았을 뿐이다”로부터, 현실에 도착해 있는 미래형 인간인 ‘어린이’를 떠올린다. 그는 우리가 모두 어린이였던 시기를 회상함으로써, 어른의 세계에 담긴 불안과 회의, 좌절과 한계에 맞서는 심상을 시청각적으로 펼친다. 현재로부터 완전히 해방될 수 없는 어른의 시간은 완결되지 않은 무한한 가능성의 존재인 어린이를 통해 다른 시간으로 전개된다. 한때 어린이였던 우리를 기억하는 그의 작업은 “다음 세대에게 되돌려주어야 할 것은 무엇인가?”에 대한 질문을 제시하며, 동시에 미래 세대로의 희망과 의지를 내비친다.

우리 모두는 누구나 어린이였다. 투명하면서 도 동시에 거울처럼 반사하는 속성을 지 니고 있다. 그렇기에 주변에 어떤 누군가가 있는 것이 정말 중요한 문제이다. (어린이의 세계) 그런 속성을 지 니고 있 기에 어린이는 회색빛으로 때로는 노란빛을 띈다. 어린이는 희망이다. 우리는 희망에게 절망을 안기고 있는 것은 아닐까? 미래에 우리는 어떻게 살 것인가? 내가 세상에서 사라져도 이 세계에 남겨질 어린이들. 타의에 인해 삶을 부여받은 운명을 가진 생명이기에 때로는 그 삶에 대해 회의적인 마음을 품기 도 한다. 부모, 어른들은 그 것을 걷어내는 데에 도움을 줘야한다. 어떻게, 무엇을?
