CV

Sungseok AHN employs a variety of mediums such as photography, video, 3D modeling,VR, and game engines to recombine time and space across the virtual and real. Through this process, he tracks the accumulation of temporality and traces of existence in places, exploring their value and meaning. In particular, as an individual living in the contemporary era, the artist passes through his personal experiences. In this way, he extends these experiences from the private realm into the public sphere of societal discourse and issues, aiming to explore solutions and practical possibilities for overcoming challenges.

In his early photographic series Historic Present (2008-2012), Ahn Sungseok created a third space-time by projecting past photographs onto present-day historic sites using a projector. Since 2012, he has actively utilized cutting-edge technology and mediums to construct virtual spaces and encourage viewers to participate. The artist mainly presents immersive virtual spaces from a first-person perspective.

This approach allows the viewer(participant) to manipulate controls such as handles or joysticks and physically move within the space to explore. However, unlike conventional games, the artist does not provide viewers with the enjoyment of game performance or specific goals to achieve.

They can only move within the map designed by the artist, which closely resembles powerless individuals managed and controlled under systems and regulations in the real world.

The viewer senses the virtual space aided by devices, but doesn't perceive this world merely as an illusion or fabrication. The viewer's body becomes a part of the interface that connects the virtual and the real worlds, constantly generating images and opening up new spaces. The physical sense of the viewer connected to the virtual space doesn't confine itself solely to the virtual space; rather, it expands into tangible and empirical space through bodily interactions. As the body gets involved, the subject establishes a relation with another world. Through the establishment of this relationship, An intends to offer an opportunity to understand subjects in other worlds and strives to foster sense of community.

Sungseok AHN majored in photography and video at university. He has received accolades such as the Sony World Photography Awards in the Architecture category (2014) and the Monthly Photo Art Today's Artist Award (2010). Recently, he held a solo exhibition title Yesterday, We Were Many. Today, We Are Alone (2022), and has been actively participating in group exhibitions including Do You Miss the Future?

(2021) and Young Korean Artists 2019: Liquid

Glass Sea (2019).

안성석은 사진, 영상, 3D 모델링, VR, 게임 엔진 등 다양한 매체를 활용해 가상과 실제를 자유롭게 오가며 시공간을 재조합하고 장소에 축적된 시간성과 존재의 흔적을 추적하여, 그 가치와 의미를 탐구하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 특히 작가는 동시대를 살아가는 개인으로서 자신의 사적 경험을 경유하는데, 이를 공적 영역인 사회적 화두와 문제로 확장함으로써 그 극복의 방안과 실천 가능성을 모색한다.

최근 개인전으로 <2023 안성석: 모두의 안녕을 위해>(2023, 국립현대미술관)를 개최했으며, <어제의 우린 많았지만, 오늘은 혼자다>(2022), <미래가 그립나요?>(2021, 현대모터스튜디오), <2019젊은모색> (2019, 국립현대미술관)의 전시에 <나는 울면서 태어났지만, 많은 사람들은 기뻐했다>로 참여했다. 여러 개인전 <모두의 안녕을 위해><어제의 우린 많았지만, 오늘은 혼자다>, <사적 현재>, <사적경험>, <관할 아닌 관할>, <내일의 도덕>, <회전하는 기억>, <따가워> 등 을 통해 자신이 속한 세대와 시대, 국가와 시스템 등에 대해 역사적인 기록과 현실의 상황, 개인적인 경험이 교차하는 지점을 작품의 주제로 삼는다. 개인과 역사, 둘 사이의 ‘간극’. 두 힘의 속도차로 주체 할 수 없는 간극은 여러 가지의 풍경을 만든다. 아마도 이는 우리가 살아가는 동시대 사회에 적응하거나 저항하는 상황 혹은 잘 소화하거나 체하는 모습일 것이다. 간극의 만들어내는 풍경과 함께 이를 극복하기 위한 방안을 모색하는 태도 등을 연구하며, 세계의 불가항력인 힘과 마음과 정신, 신체에 균등치 못한 압력이 가해 변형이 일어날 때, 그것은 어떤 형태를 갖추고 있으며, 과연 우리는 무엇을 할 수 있을지 고민해본다.
