『Curved Horizon』 is my first public sculpture, measuring approximately 650×320×650 centimeters. Rather than presenting a single straight and continuous horizon line, the work is composed so that an extended line appears to be repeatedly broken, bent, and then reconnected. While the horizon is usually perceived as a stable boundary separating sky and land, or sea and sky, in this work that boundary is divided into multiple fragments, partially emptied out and refracted, so that it no longer appears as a unified, smooth line but instead feels unstable and intermittent. Installed at around human height within public space, the work is positioned so that people walking by detour around it or pass through it, at times blocking parts of the horizon line with their own bodies. Depending on the viewer’s path and changing viewpoint, the experience of the line continuously shifting between continuity and rupture unfolds. From a distance, it may appear as a single large line or band that has been folded and twisted into a monumental structure, but as one approaches, it gives the impression of separate pieces laid out with intervals between them, with the empty gaps functioning like fissures of missing time or erased memory. Through this structure, the work does not simply reproduce the familiar symbolism of the horizon as future, hope, or an endlessly advancing path. Instead, it becomes a visual device that metaphorically reveals how that image is refracted and broken within social history and individual life. As a result, “Curved Horizon” stands as a large linear structure placed in a public site, while at the same time acting as a sculptural question about boundaries, time, and memory, making visible how things that seem destined to continue endlessly can, in reality, be easily severed and bent.


『굴절된 수평선』은 약 6500x3200x6500(cm) 크기의 첫 공공조형물로, 하나의 곧은 선으로 이어진 수평선이라기보다, 길게 뻗은 선이 중간중간 끊기고 꺾이면서 이어지는 조합처럼 보이도록 구성된 조형물이다. 수평선은 보통 하늘과 땅, 바다와 하늘을 가르는 안정된 경계로 인식되지만, 이 작품에서는 그 경계가 여러 조각으로 나뉘고, 부분적으로 비워지거나 굴절된 형태를 취해 더 이상 단일하고 매끄러운 선이 아니라 불안정하고 단속적인 선처럼 느껴지게 만든다. 공공 공간 속에서 사람의 키와 비슷하거나 그 주변 높이로 배치되어, 걷는 사람이 작품을 우회하거나 통과하면서 수평선의 일부를 몸으로 가리기도 하고, 어떤 각도에서는 수평선이 끊긴 지점이 더 두드러져 보이기도 하는 등, 관람자의 동선과 시점 변화에 따라 선의 이어짐과 끊어짐이 계속 달라지는 체험이 발생한다. 멀리서 보면 하나의 커다란 선 혹은 띠가 접히고 비틀려 있는 거대한 구조물처럼 보이지만, 가까이 다가가면 서로 다른 조각들이 간격을 두고 놓여 있는 듯한 인상을 주며, 그 사이의 빈 공간이 마치 빠져나간 시간이나 지워진 기억의 틈처럼 작동한다. 이런 형식을 통해 작품은 ‘수평선=미래, 희망, 끝없이 나아가는 길’ 같은 익숙한 상징을 그대로 재현하기보다, 그 이미지가 실제 사회와 역사, 개인의 삶 안에서 어떻게 굴절되고 단절되는지를 은유적으로 드러내는 시각적 장치가 된다. 결과적으로 『굴절된 수평선』은 공공장소에 놓인 거대한 선형 구조물이면서, 동시에 ‘끝없이 이어져야 할 것들이 실제로는 얼마나 쉽게 끊기고 휘어지는가’를 드러내는, 경계와 시간, 기억에 대한 질문을 시각적으로 제기하는 조형물이라는 이미지를 지닌다.
